Softball Splits with Muhlenberg

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split a pair of games with Muhlenberg College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

 

Muhlenberg scored the only run of the first game in the top of the sixth innings. Brittany Campbell went 7.0 innings and struck out three in the loss.

 

In the second game, the bats came alive. Mariah Ripken hit her first homerun at Neumann in the bottom of the seventh inning, a two-run shot, to win the game 7-6.

 

The Muhls took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Knights took the lead in the fourth inning as Kim Kirkpatrick hit a two-run shot. Jacki Herrrington then hit a two-run single for a 4-2 Neumann lead.

 

The teams would trade runs for a 5-3 Knights advantage heading into the seventh inning. Muhlenberg scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead and force Neumann to bat in the home half of the inning.

 

Herrington opened the inning with a single. Ripken came up the plate with a runner on and one out and hit her first homerun to center field for the 7-6 walk-off win.

 

Kirkpatrick went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Rachel Purpuro started the game for the Knights and went 4.0 innings. Carley Gustin went two innings. Campbell came in the seventh innings and picked up the win.

 

Neumann is now 6-6 on the season. The Knights will travel to Alvernia University on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
