ASTON, Pa. – Freshman Ashley Hawkins netted her first two collegiate goals to lead the Neumann University women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over DeSales University on Wednesday evening.
After getting some chances on both sides, Hawkins opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a goal off a pass from Tonia Russo. Just three minutes later, Hawkins notched her second goal to put the Knights up 2-0.
The Knights received an own goal in the 55th minute after Allie MacNeill took a direct kick and the DeSales defender knocked the ball into her own goal. Neumann would take it for a 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs would not go quietly and kept the pressure up as the clock kept ticking. DeSales spoiled the possible shutout in the 79th minute when Claire Depew scored off a cross pass from Lydia Younger.
With under a minute left in regulation, DeSales almost had a breakaway, but strong defensive play by Heather Hopkins negated the chance and kept the Knights lead at two.
Neumann came away with the 3-1 win. Brittany Russ started in goal and made three saves in 70+ minutes. Briana King made her collegiate debut and made one save and allowed one goal in almost 20 minutes.
Neumann improves to 2-3 on the season. The Knights will open conference play on Saturday when they host Immaculata at 3:30 PM.
