ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team fell in a last second shot to Alvernia University 56-53 on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
JoHanna Metzger led the Knights with a double-double, 13 points and 19 rebounds. Erica Marvel notched 12 points, Jessica Schlesman 11 and Colleen Hinde added 10.
With the teams tied at 14 with 7:41 left in the first half, the Knights went on a 7-0 run to take a 21-14 lead. The Crusaders then netted the next six points to get to within one. The teams traded baskets to end the half with Neumann leading 23-22.
Neumann came out hot in the first half and built its lead up to eight, 32-24. The Knights continued to stay just ahead of the Crusaders as the second half time ticked away. With 2:37 left on the clock, Alvernia got within one, 51-50. Hinde hit a layup for put Neumann back up by three, 53-50. The Crusaders went 1-for-2 at the line for a two point game, 53-51, with two minutes remaining.
Neither team could make a basket down the stretch until Alvernia hit a layup with 22 seconds left and a 53-53 game. The Crusaders hit a three-pointer with four seconds on the clock to finally break through and take a 56-53 lead. The Knights could not get another shot off and the game became final.
Neumann (1-2) travels to King's (Pa.) on Thursday evening for non-conference action beginning at 7:00 PM.
