CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team knocked off Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) rival Clarks Summit University 2-0 on a rainy and cold Saturday afternoon.
Christian Cortese and
Jon Cobb scored for the Knights, while
Jake McDevitt played a part in both goals.
Shane Smith picked up his second consecutive shutout in net, making two saves in the win.
Neumann dominated play early and had many opportunities to open the scoring. A pair of freshmen had the best chances to score in the game's opening minutes.
Nick Testa volleyed a shot that was just tipped wide and
Daniel Rival had a great shot denied by a scrambling Defenders goalie. After numerous shot attempts, the Knights were finally rewarded in the 38
th minute. McDevitt ripped a shot that was knocked down by the Clarks Summit goalie right to Cortese, who put the ball away for a 1-0 lead. Neumann would head to the break with a 20-2 edge in shots.
The second half would start much like the first half finished for the Knights. Just 15 minutes into the half, McDevitt would slip a ball behind the Clarks Summit defense to Cobb, who calmly deposited the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. Neumann would keep the Defenders off the board for the remainder of the game, outshooting them 27-4 on the afternoon.
Neumann (5-11, 3-4 CSAC) will look to pick up its third consecutive CSAC win as it hosts Gwynedd Mercy University on Tuesday in a matchup with big playoff implications. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
