ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team scored a crucial win in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action, defeating visiting Rosemont College 5-0 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
Needing a win to qualify for the playoffs, the Knights received big contributions from their top offensive players.
Christian Cortese notched two goals and two assists, while
Jake McDevitt finished with a goal and two assists as well. Neumann also received goals from
Jon Cobb and
Alex Vazquez to round out the scoring. Goalies
Shane Smith and
Perry Corsetti combined to make three saves in net in the win.
Knowing they controlled their own playoff destiny, the Knights came out of the gates flying. Just seven minutes into the game, McDevitt got the home side off to a good start by knocking in his team-leading eighth goal of the season off a great through ball from Cortese. Neumann would continue buzzing and after several other quality chances went beckoning, Cortese would strike in the 20
th minute. McDevitt saw his initial shot stopped by the Ravens keeper but Cortese was there to clean up the rebound to make the score 2-0.
Just five minutes later, the dynamic pair of juniors was at it again. McDevitt again picked out Cortese, who slotted the ball past the keeper for his second goal of the game in the 25
th minute. The Knights would continue pressing and found their fourth goal of the game in the 39
th minute.
Abu Donzo and Cortese had a nice give and go to set up a wonderful strike by Cobb, who drilled the ball into the upper-90 from just outside the box. The game would head to halftime with Neumann leading 4-0 and outshooting the Ravens by a count of 20-6.
The Knights continued to play excellent soccer in the second half and were rewarded with their fifth goal of the match in the 66
th minute when Vazquez buried a ball home off the post for his first career collegiate goal. Neumann's backline would continue to shine, and held Rosemont scoreless for the remainder of the game. This marks the fourth consecutive game where the Knights have held their opponent scoreless, good for a streak of 366 minutes without conceding a goal.
Neumann (7-11, 5-4 CSAC) will look to continue peaking at the right time as it heads to the CSAC playoffs next week. The Knights will be the #5 seed in the playoffs, and will play Tuesday at a date, time and location to be determined.
