SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team won its final game of the regular season, knocking off Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) rival Marywood University by a score of 1-0.
Jack Norwood was the hero for the Knights on the day, scoring the game winner off an assist from
Jake McDevitt.
Perry Corsetti was strong in goal for Neumann, making four saves to pick up his seventh shutout of the season.
Neumann got off to an excellent start, applying pressure in the Marywood end and generating a corner kick just over a minute into the game. Off the set piece, McDevitt whipped in an excellent ball inside the box that was headed home by Norwood to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead. After the goal, Neumann continued to carry the play, creating a few fantastic chances along the way.
In the 23
rd minute the Knights almost doubled their lead twice.
Christian Cortese banged home a loose ball in the box, but as the ball hit the back of the net the senior forward was whistled for offsides. Just thirty seconds later the Knights almost scored again, as a well-struck shot from sophomore
Daniel Rival was tipped just over the bar by the Pacers keeper. The game would head to halftime with Neumann holding a 1-0 lead and 6-5 edge in shots.
Needing a goal to tie the match up, Marywood came out strong to start the second half. In the 67
th minute the Pacers saw their best chance to level the score as they ripped a ball off the crossbar. After the near miss, the Knights responded with a quality opportunity of their own.
Matt Sengphachanh tucked home what appeared to be Neumann's second goal of the game in the 87
th minute, but Neumann was again called offsides and the game remained 1-0. The Pacers would apply some late pressure in the Neumann end, but the Knights stood tall and held on for the 1-0 win.
With the win, Neumann (7-7-1, 5-3-1 CSAC) clinches the #4 seed for next week's CSAC men's soccer playoffs. The fourth seeded Knights will have a rematch versus fifth seeded Marywood in the first round of the playoffs next Tuesday, October 31
