LANCASTER, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team held on for a 58-56 win at Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon.
Minika Glenn led the Knights with 20 points.
Nafisa Saunders added 16 points.
Alex Fernandez added eight points off the bench.
All four quarters were close as neither team could get the key run to take control of the contest. Early on with the game tied at six, the Knights went on an 8-1 run to take a 14-7 advantage. The Chargers scored the last four points of the quarter for a 14-11 score after the first 10 minutes.
Over the second quarter, Neumann took an 18-16 score and went on an 11-2 run to jump out to a 29-18 lead. Lancaster Bible answered by scoring the next nine points to get back to within two, 29-27, with a minute left before halftime. The Knights took a 31-29 lead into the break.
The Chargers scored the first basket of the third quarter to tie the game. They would hold a small advantage throughout the 10 minutes to take a 45-44 lead into the final quarter.
Two minutes into the final quarter, Lancaster Bible built a six points lead, 50-44. Neumann answered with the next six points to tie the game. After the teams traded the baskets, Glenn put the Knights up 54-52 with 3:58 left in regulation. A jumper by
Mariah Maciejewski gave Neumann a four point advantage. Two free throws by the Chargers with 2:22 on the clock made it a one possession game. Neither team would find the basket until Saunders hit two free throws with 15 second remaining to seal the win and put the game out of reach, even as Lancaster Bible hit a layup with two seconds remaining.
Neumann (6-4) will return home on Wednesday to host Penn State Abington to wrap up 2017. Action gets underway at 6:00 PM.
