UNION, N.J. – The Neumann University softball team held on for a 2-1 win over Mt. St. Mary College (N.Y.) in a NCAA Reginal on Sunday afternoon.
 
Mt. St. Mary opened the scoring in the first inning. After the RBI single, Haley Broomell and Jen Sieminski sent down 15 batters in a row.
 
Neumann scored its two runs in the third inning. With two outs, Kara Grogan walked and Becky Guinto hit a two-run shot to left field to put the Knights on top 2-1.
 
Mt. St. Mary made the seventh inning interesting. After a leadoff single, the next batter reached on an error after a sacrifice attempt to put runners on the corners. The next batter struck out for one out followed by a walk to load the bases. The none-hole hitter hit into a fielder's choice as the Knights got the out at home plate, 1-2. The lead-off hitter grounded into a 6-3 out and Neumann held on the win.
 
Broomell went 5.0 innings in the start. He allowed just the one run on three hits and struck out four. Sieminski got the save, going 2.0 innings. She allowed two hits and struck out a key batter.
 
Neumann (29-15) will face Christopher Newport in the next elimination game, beginning around 4:00 PM.
