ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team won its third straight Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship with a 5-0 win over Immaculata on Sunday afternoon.
It came down to the final deciding game for the Knights to claim the CSAC Title. In the first game of the afternoon, Immaculata won 3-2 to force the final deciding game in the double-elimination tournament.
While the guest on the scoreboard in the Championship game,
Kara Grogan hit a two-run single in the top of the third inning to put the Knights on the board.
Taylor Sirolli and
Kristina Del Gaiso led off the inning with a single and double. With two outs, Grogan hit a liner up the middle to score both of the runners.
In the fourth inning,
Becky Guinto led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by
Julia Cox. Neumann added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as
Jackie Schneider hit a two-run single to score Grogan and Guinto.
Jen Sieminski, who was named the tournament MVP, allowed six scattered hits and struck out four in the shutout win. The freshman went 3-0 in the postseason tournament. In 22.2 innings pitched, she had a 0.93 ERA and struck out 23.
In the first game of the afternoon,
Autumn Passarello put the Knights up 1-0 when she scored on a failed pickoff attempt in the first inning. The Mighty Macs tied the game at one in the fourth inning.
Kate Korte' hit a pinch hit double in the fifth inning to score
Grace Sperrazza and give Neumann back the lead, 2-1. Immaculata responded with two runs in the sixth inning and hung on for the 3-2 win to force the second game.
Neumann (28-14) has received the CSAC automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The announcement of the tournament bracket will be made during the selection show on Monday at 1:00 PM.
