COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – After a frustrating three games to start the season, the Neumann University men's soccer team bounced back in big way Wednesday evening with a dramatic 1-0 win over host Ursinus College.
Freshman
Marlon Trejo scored the game winner for the Knights with just under three minutes left to play in the match. Senior
Perry Corsetti was excellent in goal, stopping four shots in the shutout win.
Neumann set the tone early in the opening half with excellent possession to begin the game. The Knights were confident on the ball and used that possession to create a few quality chances in first frame. The team's best opportunity came late in the half when
Christian Cortese buried a ball into the back of the net off a set piece. Unfortunately for the Knights, the senior forward was called offside on the play and the game would remain scoreless until halftime.
The Knights would continue their solid play into the second half. Neumann continued to string together passes and were rewarded with a few golden opportunities throughout the period. Cortese was close again to putting the Knights out in front in the 64
th minute. After a shot was blocked in the Bears box, Cortese one-timed the rebound towards the Ursinus goal, but a Bear defender saved it on the goal line to keep the game scoreless.
As dense fog began to engulf the field late in the match, Neumann continued to apply pressure in the Ursinus end. Five minutes after Cortese's effort was cleared off of the line,
Billy Swontek created an opportunity of his own. The senior defender dribbled through the Bears backline and after a bit of contact with the Ursinus keeper, tapped home what appeared to be the go-ahead goal. Unfortunately for Neumann though, for the second time in the match the goal was called back due to a foul.
Undeterred by the misfortune of having two goals called back, the Knights continued to press on and were finally rewarded with just under three minutes to play. After drawing a foul just outside the box, Neumann looked to Trejo to work some magic. The freshman midfielder would provide just that, bending a ball around the four man wall through the fog and into the back of the net to give the Knights the lead with just 2:50 left to play. Ursinus responded with a few chances of their own late, but a Corsetti save with 40 seconds left to play sealed the win for the Knights.
Neumann (1-3) returns home for another non-conference matchup on Saturday, September 16
th when it takes on Penn State Abington. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
