Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls to Randolph Macon

GLEN ALLEN, Va. – The Neumann University men's soccer team dropped its season opening game on Saturday afternoon on the road at Randolph Macon College by a score of 2-0.

The two teams opened up playing relatively even throughout the game's opening 20 minutes, but it would be Randolph Macon who would breakthrough midway through the half. After a failed clear by a Neumann defender, the Yellow Jackets pounced on a loose ball and deposited it in the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead at the 22:55 mark of the period.

Neumann responded with a bit of strong play late in the half, but could not find an equalizer. The Knights best chance came in the 32nd minute, when sophomore Daniel Rival ripped a shot that forced the Yellow Jacket keeper to make a diving save. The game would head to halftime with Randolph Macon leading 1-0.

The second half would see the Knights begin on the front foot. Using quality possession, Neumann generated several quality opportunities in the second stanza but again came up empty. Freshman Marlon Trejo whistled a shot just over the bar early in the half, while Rival had a second quality chance saved by the Randolph Macon keeper midway through the period.

With the game still at 1-0 late in the half, the Yellow Jackets sealed the win off a corner kick in the 78th minute. Neumann cleared the initial cross out of the box, but the bouncing ball found the foot of an on-rushing Randolph Macon player whose shot ricocheted off a few bodies and into the goal to clinch the victory.

The loss to the Yellow Jackets punctuated a frustrating weekend for Neumann. The team was supposed to open its season yesterday afternoon versus Virginia Wesleyan College, but saw the game canceled due to poor weather conditions. The Knights were leading 1-0 in the 29th minute before the match was called.

Neumann (0-1) will look to rebound with a win in its home opener scheduled for Tuesday, September 5th versus Salisbury University. Game-time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
