IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team pulled out a dramatic, double-overtime come from behind 3-2 victory in Atlantic East Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Immaculata University.
Ainsley Reid scored the game-winning goal and added an assist for Neumann in the win, while
Marlon Trejo picked up a pair of assists.
Jack Norwood and
Nick Testa also scored for the Knights, who received three saves in goal from
Shane Smith.
In a battle for first place in the Atlantic East Conference standings, both teams came out sharp to start the contest. Neumann enjoyed much of the game's early possession and generated a few opportunities in the first 30 minutes in the half, but the game remained scoreless until late in the period. Despite carrying play for much of the frame, Neumann found itself down 1-0 in 32
nd minute when a Mighty Mac banged home a loose ball in the box. Smith made the initial save, but had no help in clearing the rebound as the hosts jumped out in front.
The Knights responded right away though, answering the Immaculata goal with a tally of their own just under six minutes later. Testa got on the end of a ball from Trejo inside the Mighty Macs box and calmly placed the ball into the left side netting to level the score at one apiece. The game would head to halftime at the same score, with Neumann holding a 6-5 edge in shots.
The visitors ratcheted up their level even further in the second half, outshooting Immaculata by a count of 13-3 in the frame. Despite the territorial and shot dominance though, the Mighty Macs again broke the deadlock in the 67
th minute with a finish off an end-line cross to put the hosts up 2-1.
The ensuing 23 minutes left in regulation saw countless chances for the Knights to tie the match up, but each chance went beckoning until just under five minutes left to play. Neumann finally broke through with an equalizer at the 85:05 mark of the period off a corner kick. Trejo served in a great ball from the right corner that was flicked on by Reid before being buried into the back of the net by Norwood to level the score and send the game to overtime tied at 2-2.
Neumann recorded the only shot in the first overtime, but saw much of its late momentum cancelled out when one of its players received a red card in the 98
th minute to put the Mighty Macs up a man for the entire second overtime period. Despite the disadvantage, the Knights still outshot Immaculata 3-1 in the final 10 minutes of the second extra session and capitalized late when it mattered most.
Trejo again played the role of playmaker after finding a ball on the left flank with a minute left in the contest. The sophomore midfielder played a beautiful ball into the box to a streaking Reid, who took a touch at the penalty spot and ripped a shot towards the Immaculata net. The initial shot was saved by the Mighty Mac net-minder, but Reid followed up and banged home the rebound to clinch the dramatic 3-2 win for the Knights to keep the team undefeated in Atlantic East play (4-0-1).
Neumann (8-4-2, 4-0-1 Atlantic East) will close out its regular season and Atlantic East Conference schedule on Wednesday, October 24
th when the team heads to Marywood University for a 4:00 PM kickoff. With a win, the Knights would clinch the top seed in the Atlantic East playoffs.
