ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – After falling in its season opening match a week ago, the Neumann University men's tennis team responded on Monday afternoon with its first win of the season by a score of 6-3 on the road at Eastern University.
The Knights picked up wins in two of the three doubles matches to jump out to an early 2-1 lead in the contest.
Perry Corsetti and
Billy Swontek paired up for a convincing 8-1 win at third doubles before
Christian Cortese and
Evan King teamed up for a hard-fought win at second doubles in a tie-breaker by a score of 9-8 (7-5). In those matches, Corsetti, Cortese and King all picked up the first wins of their collegiate tennis careers.
Cortese, King and Swontek continued to carry Neumann as the match moved to singles play, each winning their second matches of the day. King was victorious in third singles (6-4, 6-4), Swontek took home a win at fourth singles (6-1, 6-0) and Cortese swept his way to victory at fifth singles (6-0, 6-0). Rounding out the scoring for Neumann on the afternoon was
Jake McDevitt, who also won his first career match at sixth singles by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Neumann gets back in action on Friday, March 23
rd when the team heads to Cabrini University for its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener. Game-time is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
