ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a score of 9-5 on the road at Centenary University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
Eric Conlon was a man possessed on the afternoon, scoring all five of Neumann's goals in the defeat.
Brendan Risley also had a strong game, but his 11 saves were not enough to save the Knights' season.
With both teams needing a win to claim the fourth and final spot in the CSAC playoffs, the matchup had an extra bit of intensity early on. Neumann came out of the gates strong, as Conlon fired home two tallies early in the first frame to put the Knights up 2-0 with 6:12 left to play in the quarter. Centenary would respond though, scoring twice in the final 1:06 of the period to knot the contest up at two apiece heading to the second stanza.
The Cyclones continued to roll into the second quarter, tacking on two more markers to make it 4-2 midway through the frame. The Knights would not go quietly though, as Conlon found the back of the net with 2:51 left in the half to send the visitors to the halftime break down by just a goal at 4-3.
Defense and goaltending would be the story after halftime, as both teams struggled to score in the third quarter. Centenary scored just 40 seconds into the period, but Neumann did not allow a goal the remainder of the quarter to keep things close. Late in the frame, the Knights continued to fight back as Conlon scored again off a feed from
Chris Augustine to bring the deficit back to one at 5-4 as the contest headed to the fourth and final quarter.
The Cyclones again gave themselves some breathing room early in the final period of play with a goal just 1:03 into play, but the Knights kept battling. Scoring his fifth goal of the game, Conlon again brought Neumann back within a goal at the 8:37 mark, but it would be as close as the visitors would get. Centenary pushed back with three late unanswered goals to seal the 9-5 win and earn the final playoff spot ahead of the Knights.
Neumann finishes its season with a record of 4-11 overall and 3-4 in the CSAC. The Knights lose only four players heading into next season and will look to build on the team's late season momentum as they look to 2019.
