Men's Soccer Battles Past Bears in Double Overtime

ASTON, Pa. – After falling in double-overtime in its previous game last Friday at Penn State Harrisburg, the Neumann University men's soccer team flipped the script on Wednesday afternoon, picking up a 2-1 double-overtime victory over visiting Ursinus College.

Nick Testa scored the game-winning goal in the second extra session for the Knights, who also received a goal from Marlon Trejo. Danny Lewis made five saves to pick up the win in goal for Neumann after coming in in relief of starter Shane Smith.

Scoring chances were few and far between for both teams in the opening period of play, with each team tallying five shots apiece. The Knights held a 3-1 edge in shots on goal, but they could not find the back of the net as the game headed to halftime scoreless.

As the whistle blew to start the second half though, the game came to life. Just six minutes after the break, Gavin Ford sparked the Knights with a bit of individual flair. After receiving the ball on the left side of the box, the freshman forward knifed through two Bear defenders and was hauled down to give Neumann a penalty kick. For the second time in as many games, Trejo stepped up to the spot and ripped home the attempt to put the Knights ahead 1-0.

The lead would be short-lived though, as Ursinus answered back almost right away. The Bears headed home a cross just 41 seconds after Trejo's goal to bring the match back to level at one apiece.

Both teams pressed forward for a winner, but just 10 minutes after the goals, an Ursinus player was sent off with a red card. The Knights looked to capitalize on the man-up advantage but could not find a goal in regular time. The game headed to overtime with each team attempting 12 shots in regulation.

Once the game moved into the extra session, it was all Neumann. The Knights sent numbers forward seeking out a decisive goal, but despite a 6-1 shot advantage in the first overtime, the hosts continued to be stymied. Matt Sengphachanh nearly scored on a breakaway, but a key save from the Ursinus keeper kept the game dead-locked heading into the second overtime period.

Neumann continued to dominate in the second extra period and finally found a breakthrough in the 104th minute. Ainsley Reid found the ball in a pocket of space just outside the box, drove towards the Bears' back-line and slipped a beautiful through ball to a streaking Testa, who made no mistake to give the Knights the dramatic 2-1 victory.

Neumann (2-2-1) will now have a week off before returning home for a non-conference matchup with Widener University on Wednesday, September 19th. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
