Men's Soccer Season Ends in Heartbreak at Wesley

DOVER, Del. - The Neumann University men's soccer team saw its season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 2-1 in double overtime to host Wesley College in the first round of the Atlantic East Conference playoffs.

Matt Brown scored for the Knights in the loss, while Seth Walker made two saves in goal.

In a rematch from just three days ago, the Knights looked for revenge from a 5-2 loss on Wednesday's senior day. Saturday's match would be much closer, with each team creating chances early in the contest. Neumann held a 4-3 edge in shots in the frame, but an unfortunate call in the box late in the half led to an early Wesley lead. After a bit of contact from a Knight defender, the Wolverines earned a penalty kick and converted it for the lone tally of the half.

The Knights threw everything they had at Wesley in the second stanza but were rebuffed on each attacking chance early in the period. Neumann thought it had an equalizer midway through the frame as a set piece found the back of the net, only to be called back for a foul on a Neumann player impeding the Wolverine goalkeeper. Just as the game looked to be ending in a Wesley win though, the Knights were finally able to break through. Eddie Proud broke free down the right flank and found Daniel Rival cutting towards the goal. The senior defender drove a bouncing ball towards the back post that was rammed home by Brown with just 15 seconds to play to knot the match up at 1-1 as the game headed to overtime.

Each team had quality chances to win in the first extra session, but no one could break the deadlock as the game moved into the final ten minute double overtime period. The game looked to be heading to a shootout when Wesley found the winner. A long free kick was played into the box by the Wolverines with just over two minutes to play and after a bit of scramble in the box, the hosts banged home a loose ball on the six yard marker to seal the 2-1 victory.

With the loss, Neumann (4-13-1, 2-4 Atlantic East) sees its season come to an end. The team will look to regroup in the offseason and get back to championship form in the 2020 season.
