Men's Lacrosse Stumbles to First Loss at Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Neumann University men's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the 2019 season on Monday afternoon, falling by a score of 14-11 to host Greensboro College.

Colin Blake led the team on the afternoon with six points on five goals and an assist. Brett McLaughlin (2 g, 2 a) and Chris Augustine (1 g, 2 a) also had multi-point games, while Brendan Risley made 10 saves in goal in the loss.

Greensboro got the scoring started four minutes into the contest to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Knights would answer back with authority. Neumann retaliated with three unanswered goals in the next three minutes including a pair from Blake to take a 3-1 lead. The Pride cut the lead to 3-2 at the 7:13 mark, but just like earlier in the frame, the visitors responded quickly. Neumann tallied three straight goals to take a 6-2 lead via goals from McLaughlin, Augustine and Wyatt Bellotti with 3:58 left to play in the period. Just as the game looked to head to the break at the same score, two late man-up goals from Greensboro got the hosts back into the game at 6-4 heading to the second.

The second quarter would be a back and forth even affair. The Pride cut the lead to 6-5 two minutes into the stanza before two Knight goals from Blake and Max Nice made it 8-5. Greensboro again fought back with two of the final three goals of the frame, but Neumann would take a tight 9-7 lead to halftime.

The game continued to follow a more defensive minded script in the third quarter. An early Neumann goal from Blake made it 10-7 and the game would remain that way until late in the period. The Pride recorded the next two goals a minute apart with under five minutes left in the frame, but a McLaughlin goal with just 27 seconds left in the quarter restored the Knights' two-goal cushion at 11-9 heading into the fourth.

Unfortunately for Neumann, the two-goal advantage would not last. The Knights tried to hold onto the lead, but the Greensboro attack proved to be too much in the final 15 minutes of play. The Pride scored twice midway through the quarter to knot the contest up at 11-11, then tacked on three more goals late to clinch the 14-11 victory.

Neumann (2-1) will return home for its home-opener this Saturday, March 2nd versus Farmingdale State. Game-time for the non-conference matchup is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
