BALTIMORE, Md. - The Neumann University men's lacrosse team fell in non-conference action on Wednesday evening, dropping a 13-8 result to host Goucher College.
Eric Conlon (3 g) and
Max Nice (1 g, 2 a) each recorded three points in the loss, while
Hunter Faunce registered 13 saves in goal.
Jack Newswanger was also excellent in defeat, scoring a goal, winning 15-of-24 faceoffs and picking up 13 ground balls.
After a long trip down to Maryland, the Knights came out sluggish to open the contest. Goucher dominated the opening quarter by scoring the only five goals of the period to take an early 5-0 lead after the first frame.
Neumann would bounce back in the second stanza though, getting back into the game with two goals to open the quarter. Conlon and
Rich Marshall found the back of the net early in the period to make it 5-2 with 6:26 left to play in the half. From there the teams would trade goals until halftime. Goucher answered back to make it 6-2, but a Newswanger goal at the 1:40 mark brought the score back to 6-3. Just as the Knights thought they had made it to halftime though, the Gophers fired home again with four seconds remaining to take a 7-3 lead into intermission.
The hosts would continue to widen their lead as the game moved to the third quarter. Using four of the first five goals of the half, the Gophers jumped out to an 11-4 lead. Neumann got one back before the end of the period via
Brett McLaughlin but the game headed to the final frame with the visitors down by six.
The Knights outscored Goucher 3-2 in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late. Despite goals from Conlon, Nice and
Colin Blake, the Gophers held on for the 13-8 victory.
Neumann (2-4) will return home for another non-conference matchup with the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, March 16th. Game-time is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
