Men's Soccer Picks Up First Win at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. - The Neumann University men's soccer team rebounded from a tough opening night loss with a resounding 3-0 win at Goucher College on Saturday evening.

Matt Sengphachanh was the difference maker for the Knights on the day, scoring twice in the win. Marlon Trejo also scored for the Knights, who also received a three save shutout performance from goalie Seth Walker in his first career win.

Neumann wasted no time jumping all over the Gophers, tallying the game's first goal in the fifth minute. Nick Testa found the ball in behind the Goucher defense after a fantastic run, then slipped a pass to Sengphachanh, who wired a first time shot past the Gopher keeper to put the visitors up 1-0.

The Knights remained on the front foot the remainder of the half and nearly doubled their lead 10 minutes later as Ainsley Reid floated a shot from close range off the crossbar. Despite the near miss the game would not stay 1-0 for long though. Trejo collected a loose ball at the top of box midway through the frame and ripped a shot past the Goucher keeper to double the Neumann lead. The Knights had several other chances to extend their lead as the half winded down, but the game went to the halftime intermission at 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

Neumann continued to roll in the second stanza, killing off the game just 12:47 into the half. An excellent individual effort from Sengphachanh resulted in the Knights' third goal of the contest. The junior forward raced down the left flank, cut inside past a defender and deposited the ball into the back of the net to give the visitors a commanding 3-0 lead. From there, it was smooth sailing the rest of the way for Neumann. A steady back line and commitment to defending from all 11 players on the field led the team to its first win of the 2019 season.

Neumann (1-1) will head home to Aston for its home opener on Tuesday night versus Salisbury University. Game-time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
