BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team returned to action after winter break at the Steel Club Classic, falling to host Moravian College in non-conference action by a score of 63-50.
Chelsea Keebler led the team on the day with 12 points, while
Jaylin Ortiz chipped in with six points and a team-leading nine rebounds and four assists.
The Knights dug themselves a hole early in the first quarter. After an early bucket from
Kamryn Englert gave Neumann a quick 2-0 lead, Moravian went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead with 5:58 left in the first frame. Two three-pointers from Keebler got the visitors back into the contest, but Moravian would lead after the opening quarter by a score of 18-10.
The second quarter saw Moravian blow the game wide-open. Using a 25-6 run to open the quarter, Moravian sprinted out to a commanding 43-16 lead with 1:44 left in the period. Five late points from
Tierra Harris cut the Greyhounds lead to 45-21 to end the half, but the Knights would have an uphill battle the rest of the way to close the gap.
Neumann would play much better in the second half, but the 24 point deficit was too much to overcome. The Knights held a 14-12 edge in the third quarter led by four points each from Englert and
Lauren Leicht, but the visitors still trailed by 22 points heading to the final frame.
Neumann threw everything it had at Moravian in fourth quarter, outscoring the Greyhounds by a count of 15-6, but it was a bit too little, too late as the Knights fell by a score of 63-50.
Neumann (4-8) will look to rebound tomorrow in the tournament's consolation game when the team takes on William Paterson University. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
