PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Neumann University men's lacrosse team closed out its four-game road trip on Wednesday afternoon with a 10-7 victory over host Manhattanville College in non-conference action.
Drew Conlon sparked the offense with a team high four points (3 g, 1 a), while
Colin Blake (2 g, 1 a) and
Kyle Daly (2 g) each added a pair of goals.
Chris Augustine had a goal and an assist in the win, while
Brendan Risley was a monster in net with 17 huge saves on the day.
Jack Newswanger was also a huge factor in the victory for the Knights, winning 15-of-20 draws and picking up a team-high six ground balls.
After a week break to recover from its first loss of the season, Neumann was ready to go in Wednesday's non-conference tilt. The Knights raced out to a 2-0 start in the game's opening two minutes with a goal each from Daly and Augustine. Risley took over the rest of the frame, stopping five Manhattanville shots to keep the two-goal cushion intact until late in the quarter when the Valiants scored with 50 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 2-1. The game looked to be heading to the second period at the same scoreline, but Conlon had other ideas. The sophomore sniper ripped home his first goal of the day with just nine seconds left to make it 3-1 after one.
Manhattanville would fight back in the second stanza. The two teams split goals early in the frame as a Valiants goal just over two minutes into the quarter was matched by a goal from Blake at the 10:49 mark to make it 4-2 in favor of the Knights. The hosts would carry the play late in the half though, leveling the contest with two goals late in the period to make it 4-4 heading to halftime.
Neumann came out of the break swinging, tallying twice through the offensive creativity of Conlon. The attacker first set up Daly for his second marker of the game, then found the back of the net on his own two minutes later to make it 6-4 in favor of the visitors at the 11:37 mark. The score remained the same until late in the period, as Manhattanville got back into things with a goal with just 52 seconds left to play to make it 6-5 Knights heading to the fourth and final frame.
The Valiants continued their late third quarter momentum into the fourth, tickling the twine twice in the first five minutes of the period to take their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 10:17 left in the game. Despite the late deficit and momentum working against them, the Knights would not quit. The visitors dug deep and showed a ton of resolve to fight back into the game. Neumann tied the matchup at the 7:42 mark via Conlon's third tally of the game, then added two more goals in quick succession from
Rich Marshall and defender
Brett McLaughlin to stun Manhattanville and retake a two goal at 9-7 with 6:34 left to play. Risley and a strong team defensive effort closed things down from there. The senior net-minder made five big saves down the stretch, shutting out the Valiants the rest of the way to seal the road win. Blake put a cherry on top of the come-from-behind victory by scoring with 1:23 left to make the final 10-7.
Neumann (4-1) finishes its four-game road swing with a record of 3-1. The Knights will now return home for another non-conference contest versus Susquehanna University in Sunday, March 8th. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
