ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule in style on Wednesday afternoon, taking down visiting Marywood University by a score of 3-0 in Atlantic East Conference action.
Sam Clavijo,
Corey Madigan and
Jon Yinger all scored for Neumann in the win, while
Edwin Guerrero and
Eddie Proud chipped in with assists.
Seth Walker stood tall in goal on the day, stopping four shots to pick up his fifth shutout of the season.
Needing a win to clinch home field in the Atlantic East Conference playoffs, the Knights asserted themselves early on in the contest. Outshooting the Pacers by a count of 9-3 in the period, Neumann broke through with the game's first goal in the 28
th minute. Off a feed from Guerrero, Yinger ripped home a shot to the upper-left corner of the net from just outside the box to stake the Knights to an early 1-0 lead. Using the momentum generated from the first marker, Neumann kept its foot on the gas and scored just over two minutes later off an outstanding buildup. Stringing several passes from their own end, the hosts eventually got the ball on the left flank to Proud, who served an outstanding ball onto the six that was headed home by Clavijo to make it 2-0 in favor of the Knights. Neumann wasn't done yet though in the half, as Madigan pounced on a loose ball off a
Marlon Trejo corner and deposited it into the goal to give the Knights a commanding 3-0 lead at the halftime break.
With a three-goal cushion in the second half, Neumann took the air out of the game by keeping possession for large portions of the final 45 minutes. The Knights didn't do much going forward, but the team conceded only three shots in the stanza. When tested though, Walker came up big midway through the half. The senior goalkeeper dove full-stretch to his right to deny a long-range effort heading to the upper corner of the goal in the 58
th minute to keep the three-goal lead intact. The Neumann back-line locked it down from there, denying Marywood a shot on goal for the remainder of the game as the team sealed the pivotal 3-0 win.
Neumann (6-10-1, 3-2-1 Atlantic East) will await the result of the Marymount and Cabrini game later tonight to determine their playoff seed. With a Cabrini win the Knights would be the #3 seed in the conference playoffs and have a rematch with #6 Marywood in the opening round of the playoffs and with a Marymount win or tie in tonight's game, Neumann would be the #4 seed and play host to Centenary in the first round. Either way, the team's first round contest is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 30
