RADNOR, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer season came to an end on Saturday afternoon at Cabrini University, as the Knights fell in the Atlantic East Conference championship game by a score of 4-0.
Seth Walker made six saves on the day for Neumann in the loss, while
Chris Siemien led the team with two shots.
Looking for their second Atlantic East Conference championship in three seasons, the Knights were hoping for a repeat of the 2018 final when they knocked off the Cavaliers by a score of 3-1. Cabrini had other ideas on this day however, as the hosts jumped all over Neumann in the opening half. After a timid start from both teams, Cabrini began to assert itself midway through the frame. The Cavaliers broke through with the game's first goal in the 23
rd minute, then doubled their advantage just five minutes later to take a 2-0 lead. The game would remain at the same score-line until halftime with the Cavaliers holding a 7-1 edge in shots.
The Knights tried to battle back early in the second stanza, but continued to meet resistance from a stout Cabrini back-line that held them to just four shots. Things got even worse for the visitors in the 56
th minute, as the Cavaliers found the back of the net again to take a commanding 3-0 lead. The game was then sealed seven minutes later when the hosts scored off a set piece to make it 4-0 and end any realistic chance of a Neumann comeback.
Marlon Trejo had the Knights' best chance midway through the frame on a set piece, but a diving save from the Cabrini goalkeeper kept the shutout intact. The Cavaliers cruised from there, taking home the 4-0 victory for their first ever Atlantic East title.
Neumann (8-11-1) will miss its three seniors that the team is losing but will look to return to the championship game next year with a bit more experience under its belt. The young squad with 22 of its 29 players playing in their first ever college season will hope to parlay the championship experience into an even better season next year.
