ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team dropped a pair of games to Marywood University on Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader. The Pacers won the games 5-3 and 10-7.
Bri Lagroteria went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. Her third hit of the game, a double in the fifth inning, was the 100
th of her career.
Jess Sarni pitched a complete game, allowing five runs on eight hits.
The Pacers got on the board in the top of the first with a two-out two-run homerun. Lagroteria led off the bottom half of the first with a single and came around to score on a single by
Elizabeth Shire for a 2-1 game.
Marywood added a run in the top of the third and two more in the fourth for a 5-1 lead. In the bottom of the fourth,
Vanessa Bowen hit a solo homerun.
In the fifth, Lagroteria hit a double, her 100
th hit, and moved to third on an error. She scored on a ground out by
Kristen Pagliaro for a 5-3 score. Neumann was not able to plate anymore runs in game one and fell 5-3.
Lagroteria's bat stayed hot in game two as she added three more hits and knocked in three runs.
Rachel Albertson also knocked in three runs.
Ashley Mazzeo started the game and went 6+ innings. She allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 14 hits. Sarni came in finish out the seventh and allowed two runs on three hits.
Neumann scored first in game two, plating an unearned run in the bottom of the first. The Knights went up 2-0 in the second as
Emily Reid tripled and was knocked in by Lagroteria. The Pacers tied the game at two with a pair of runs in the top of the third.
The Knights took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third, Lagroteria hit a two-run single. The teams then traded runs and Neumann held a 5-4 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth. With two-runners on base, Albertson hit at two-run single for give the Knights a 7-4 lead heading into the seventh inning.
The Pacers opened the seventh with four straight singles and pulled to within one, 7-6. With the bases loaded and one out, the Pacers hit into a fielders choice as the Knights cut down the tying run at the plate for the second out. The bases remained loaded and Marywood hit a grand slam to take a 10-7 advantage.
The Knights could not get base runners in the bottom of the seventh and fell 10-7 in game two.
Neumann (9-11, 7-11 Atlantic East) will now prepare for the first round of the Atlantic East postseason, which will begin next weekend.
