GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team fell just short at Gwynedd Mercy University, 74-73, on Monday evening in an Atlantic East Conference first round game.
Madison Stewart led the Knights with 21 points, hitting four three-pointers, while handing out six assists.
Tierra Harris netted 17 points.
Dymond Collins notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Griffins built an eight-point lead, 18-10, with three minutes left in the first quarter. The Knights finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to pull within two, 20-18.
A jumper by
Aubrie Breisblatt tied the game at 20 early in the second. Tied at 31, Gwynedd Mercy went on a 12-4 run for a 43-35 advantage. The Griffins took a 45-37 lead into the break.
Gwynedd Mercy held the lead throughout the third quarter. Neumann pulled to within two, 60-58, on two free throws by Harris in the final minute of the quarter. The Griffins hit a layup before the buzzer for a 62-58 lead heading into the final quarter.
Breisblatt opened the scoring again, this time with a three-pointer, to pull within one, 62-61. With 3:25, Gwynedd Mercy led by seven, 74-67. A layup by Stewart and jumper by
Terea Hunt brought the Knights to within three with 2:31 left in regulation. After a steal with 1:27 on the clock, Stewart pulled Neumann to within one, 74-73.
Each team had their shots over the final minute. The Knights had what turned into the final two shots of the game with 12 second and at the buzzer, but neither shot would go, and the Griffins held on for the one-point win.
Neumann finishes its season 9-17.
