ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's tennis team moved one step closer in its journey for an Atlantic East Conference Championship on Wednesday afternoon, taking home a 6-3 win over visiting Marywood University in the conference semifinals.
Daniel Bonowski and
Justin McCullen carried the Knights on the day, earning wins in both their singles and doubles matches.
Things did not start as planned for the Knights, as the team fell in an early hole thanks to a pair of tiebreak losses in doubles. Bonowski and McCullen easily won at first doubles by a score of 8-3, but the Pacers took home wins at both second and third doubles to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. The team of
Vince Landis and
Sean Flannery fell by a score of 8-7 (8-6) at second doubles, while
Anthony Carpinella and
Joe Troilo dropped their match at third doubles by a score of 8-7 (8-3).
Needing a big bounce back in singles play, Neumann got just that. The Knights got right back into the match with two quick wins by McCullen and Carpinella to take a 3-2 lead. McCullen was victorious at second doubles by a count of 6-2, 6-1, while Carpinella picked up a win at sixth singles by an identical score of 6-2, 6-1.
Landis' match was the next to finish, as he took down his competition at third singles (6-3, 6-1) to build the Neumann lead in the match to 4-2. Marywood kept itself alive though, winning at fourth singles to add intrigue to the remaining matches at first and fifth singles.
Needing just one win in the final two matches, Troilo was able to propel the Knights to victory with a hard-fought win at fifth singles by a score of 7-5, 6-4. Bonowski then finished off his opponent at first singles just minutes later, fighting back from a first set loss to win his match 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Neumann (7-2) will have a day off before traveling south to Marymount University to compete against the Saints for the Atlantic East Conference Championship on Friday, April 29
