ABINGTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team opened the 2022 campaign with a 2-1 win at Penn State Abington on Thursday afternoon.
Chimdi Ekwem and
Daniel Decker notched the goals for the Knights in the win.
Javier Mejia and
Jake Kuzmick added assists on the afternoon, while
Seth Walker stopped four shots in goal.
The Knights controlled play for much of the opening half, dominating possession and out-shooting the Lions by a count of 5-2 in the first 45 minutes. The territorial edge finally paid off late in the half in the 38
th minute, as a pair of super-subs combined for the opening tally of the contest. Mejia beat his man down the left flank and served a perfect ball across the box that Ekwem banged home at the back-post to give Neumann a 1-0 edge heading to halftime.
The Lions responded in the second stanza and began to assert themselves as the game moved later into the period. Using a set piece, the hosts knocked home a loose ball off a rebounded shot to tie the game at one in the 66
th minute.
Nine minutes later though, the resilient Knights came fighting back.
Chris Siemien delivered a beautiful corner to the far post that Kuzmick headed towards the goal. The keeper made the initial save by tipping the ball off the crossbar, but Decker was there for the rebound and slammed home the ball into the upper-90 of the net for his first collegiate goal to give the Knights a 2-1 lead with 15:55 left to play.
Neumann had a chance to add an insurance goal with a penalty kick with under 10 minutes to play in the game, but the Lions keeper made an excellent diving save on a Siemien attempt to keep the score at 2-1. The visitors grinded out nine of the final 10 minutes left in the contest, but Penn State Abington was able to generate one more look on goal in the final minute of the game. After a ball snuck past the Neumann back-line, a Penn State Abington attacker was hauled down in the box for a penalty kick. The -ensuing spot-kick sailed high over the goal though, and the Knights were able to breath a sigh of relief as the game finished 2-1 in their favor.
Neumann (1-0) will host Hood on Saturday in the home opener. Action is slated to get underway at 4:00 PM.
