SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Softball team split an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader with the Marywood University Pacers on Sunday afternoon. The Pacers took game one 7-0 before the Knights grabbing game two by a final score of 3-1.
Game one started with Marywood taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning on two RBI base hits. In the fifth, the Pacers used an RBI double for a four run lead. They scored three more in the sixth on the strength of a run-scoring error and a two-run single.
Taylor Portzline and
Alyssa Celi had the lone Knights' hit while Elizabeth Shite reached twice via walks.
Ashlynne Scardino hurled a complete game but suffered the loss to drop her record to 3-6. In her six innings of work, she only allowed one earned run and struck out two.
Neumann was finally able to get on the board in the first inning of game two. With one out,
Cioni Simmons hit an infield single and stole second. After moving to third on a groundout, Portzline drove her home with an RBI single to right. Shire hit a base hit to left, moving Portzline to second.
Maddie Tice followed with an RBI single to left-centerfield and the Knights had a 2-0 lead.
The Pacers cut their deficit in half in the fourth with an RBI infield hit but Neumann retook a two run lead quickly.
Kristen Pagliaro reached on a one-out fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on a Portzline RBI single to left field. From there, the pitching and defense took over to gave the Knights the win.
Both Portzline and Shire finished 2 for 3 with Portzline adding two RBI. Tice went 1 for 3 with an RBI of her own.
Olivia Ammon earned the complete game win to improve her record to 5-5. In her seven innings, she allowed one unearned run on seven hits and a walked, while striking out four.
Neumann (8-19, 2-4 Atlantic East) will be back in action on Monday afternoon when they host the Centenary University Cyclones in another conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
