ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Marywood University on Saturday afternoon, by scores of 3-1 and 5-3.
Marywood got the game started by picking up two RBI singles in the first inning for an early lead. From there, a pitcher's duel ensued but the Pacers scored an insurance run in the fifth for a 3-0 lead.
Emily Ammon led off the sixth with a double out to left field.
Bri Reim moved her to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then E. Ammon scored the Knights' first run on a fielder's choice with
Alyssa Celi getting the run batted in. Neumann got the tying run to the plate in the seventh but could not complete the comeback.
In the second game, after a scoreless first, Marywood scored single runs in the second and third on RBI singles. With one out on the fourth,
Maddie Tice walked and
Sydney Wright doubled to move Tice to third.
Alexis Palombi drove them both home when she singled to right to tie the game.
Again, the Pacers scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to regain the lead, and extend it to three. In the bottom of the seventh,
Kristen Pagliaro hit a one-out single up the middle and immediately stole second. Celi then doubled to the centerfield wall to plate Pagliaro and send the tying run to the plate. Unfortunately for the Knights, they couldn't come up with more offense.
Celi finished the twinbill, going 3 for 7 with two runs batted in. Pagliaro had a two hit game in game two and scored a run. Palombi was 2 for 4 with two walks and two RBI between the two games.
Neumann (6-18, 0-6 Atlantic East) will return to the field on Tuesday for another Atlantic East doubleheader as they host Immaculata University. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
