GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University Softball team went up to Gwynedd Mercy University on Sunday afternoon and earned a split in an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader to end the 2025 regular season. Gwynedd Mercy won game 1, 3-2, with Neumann grabbing the finale, 9-5.
The first game turned out to be a pitcher's duel as both teams went scoreless through the first five innings. In the fifth,
Rylie Norris plated the game's first run on a ground out.
Emily Ammon followed with a sacrifice fly to double their edge. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, the Griffins walked off thanks to bases clearing double to steal the win.
In addition to her RBI E. Ammon added two stolen bases.
Marina Costello suffered the hard luck loss, hurling 6.2 innings. She allowed three runs on five hits and three walks, striking out six.
Norris led the offensive effort in game two, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. E. Ammon and
Alexis Palombi drove in two runs each. E. Ammon was 1 for 3 with two more steals, two walks, and a run scored. Palombi was also 1 for 3 with a hit-by-pitch, a walk, and a run.
The Griffins took the momentum of the game one victory into the second game, nabbing a 3-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI single and a two-run homer. Neumann started to chip away at the deficit in the third when
Cioni Simmons scored on an error. In the top of the fifth,
Jenna Calchi got the Knights within on an RBI groundout, but Gwynedd Mercy responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-run triple.
After a scoreless sixth, the Neumann bats exploded in the seventh. With the bases loaded,
Nicole Anderson was hit by a pitch,
Tori Spinella hit an RBI infield single, as did Norris, tying the game at five. E. Ammon gave Neumann the lead on a two-run single and Palombi added two more runs on a single through the right side. In all, 11 Knights came to the plate and seven runs scored, giving the game to Neumann.
Olivia Ammon earned the win in relief, working 2.2 innings from the circle. She allowed just one hit in improving her record to 3-6.
Neumann (10-30, 5-5 Atlantic East) will now await the Atlantic East Conference office's tiebreaker announcement to see if they qualify for the postseason tournament.
