ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team battled to the end but fell to Marywood University 61-52 on Wednesday evening in an Atlantic East Conference matchup.
Emily DuPont led the Knights with 19 points and eight rebounds. She also added six steals, four blocks and four assists.
Jess Aponik netted 15 points and went 7-for-8 from the line.
The teams opened the game by trading baskets. The Pacers then went on a 10-0 run for a 12-2 score midway through the first. A three-pointer by DuPont started eight straight points for the Knights and a 12-10 score. Marywood answered with two three-pointers. Neumann finished the quarter with two baskets. The Pacers held an 18-14 edge after one quarter.
With Marywood leading 21-19 with 7:51 left before halftime, the Pacers went on a 15-4 run over the rest of the quarter to extend their lead to 36-23 heading into the break.
The Knights pulled to within six during the third quarter, but the Pacers were able to keep a hold on their lead and took a 49-38 lead into the final quarter.
With 3:26 left in regulation, a layup by DuPont brought Neumann back to within six again, 56-50. Neither team would find the net over the next two minutes. A free throw by Marywood with 1:17 on the clock made the score 57-50. Two free throws by Aponik made it a five-point game with just over a minute remaining. Over the next 30 seconds, the Pacers were 1-for-4 from the line, but the Knights could not respond with a basket to cut into the deficit. Marywood finished the scoring with two free-throws and Neumann could not get another shot off for the 61-52 final.
Neumann (4-12, 2-3 Atlantic East) will host Centenary as part of an Atlantic East doubleheader with the men on Saturday. The women will tip off at 1:00 PM.
