SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Basketball team dropped a tough 60-53 Atlantic East Conference game on Wednesday against Marywood University.
After a game-opening three-pointer by Marywood, Neumann went on a 5-0 run for an early lead. The Pacers led 10-7 with 3:22 left in the first but the Knights came back to tie the game at 12 at the end of 10 minutes. The second was a low-scoring affair as both teams combined for just 16 points. Neumann pulled ahead by four at the 7:18 mark and kept that lead throughout the quarter. Both teams went scoreless over the last two minutes.
The Knights went up by six with a 7-5 run over the first two and a half minutes of the third but the Pacers answered back with a 7-2 run to get within one. Neumann would score five of the last seven points of the quarter for a 36-31 lead. Marywood started the fourth with a 10-4 run over the first five minutes to take a two-point edge. With the Knights down by four with 56 seconds left, they scored the next five points for a slim one-point lead. Only a late free throw would send the game into overtime. A six-point run over the first 1:28 of the extra session would buoy the Pacers to the hard-fought win.
Emily DuPont led the Knights with 20 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double.
Jess Aponik had eight points and eight rebounds, adding a team-high four steals.
Elaina Guerzon also had eight points.
