PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Flag Football team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon in two Atlantic East Conference matchups. In the opener, the Knights defeated Holy Family University, 20-19 in an overtime game. They finished up by dropping a 33-0 decision against Eastern University.
After a scoreless first quarter, Holy Family got on the scoreboard at 12:30 of the second with an interception for a touchdown. In the third, it was an
Ava Valente pass of 15 yards to
Kayla Maisch to get the Knights into the end zone and after they hit the conversion, the game was tied at seven. In the fourth, Neumann took the lead on a Valente touchdown pass of five yards to
Shannon Duffy, but they didn't convert. Later in the fourth, the Tigers scored a touchdown and also missed the one-point attempt, but the game went to overtime.
Holy Family was the first to try and score in the overtime session. They were able to put together a touchdown but they didn't get a conversion. Valente notched a 10 yard touchdown pass to Duffy to tie the game and then was successful on a one-point conversion to win the game.
Valente finished with 219 passing yards and three touchdown passes. She also rushed for 122 yards on 23 attempts. Duffy had 83 receiving yards on six catches.
Marie Berry led on the defensive side with eight tackles.
In the nightcap, Eastern scored on the first drive but Neumann stopped them for the rest of the first half. In the second half, they were able to pull away with a touchdown in the third and three more in the fourth.
Valente finished the game with 133 passing yards as Maisch had 52 of those receiving yards on four catches.
Ya'Nayshia Thomas led with five tackles while
Enaysia Harmon had an interception.
Neumann (3-1) will be back in action next Saturday for a tri-match at Immaculata University. They will take on Chestnut Hill College at 6:30 PM followed by a battle against the hosts.
