Softball Splits Doubleheader with Garnet

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split a doubleheader with Swarthmore College on Thursday afternoon. The Garnet took game one 7-2 while the Knights took the nightcap 5-1.
 
In the first game, Swarthmore jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Neumann answered with a run in the bottom of the first as Emily Ammon led off with a walk and stole second. The senior scored as Rebecca DiLeo reached on an error. The Garnet got the run back in the top of the second and held a 4-1 lead.
 
The Knights scored their second run in the bottom of the third as Ammon led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ellie Zarnawski. Swarthmore added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth for the 7-2 final.
 
Marina Costello started the game in the circle and struck out three in the loss. Sydney Wright went 2.0 innings.
 
In game two, the Knights started early and scored three runs in the first inning. With one out, Gracie Jairdullo singled, Zarnawski was hit by a pitch and Costello walked to load the bases. Jairdullo scored on a wild pitch and Zarnawski followed on an error. Dakota Marshall then hit an RBI single to score pinch-runner Maddi Katchuk.
 
The Garnet scored their run in the top of the second. Neumann answered back quickly and took advantage of another error and scored two runs in the bottom half of the second and hold a 5-1 lead.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, Swarthmore loaded the bases with no outs and pitched DiLeo was able to get out of the inning without allowing a run. The Garnet had runners on second and third in the fifth and again could not get a run to cross the plate.
 
Marshall and Cioni Simmons each had two hits in the game. DiLeo went the distance in the circle to pick up her fourth win of the season. She allowed one run on eight hits and struck out a pair.
 
Neumann (8-10) will host DeSales on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
