Softball Wins Opener, Drops Nightcap at Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Neumann University softball team went 1-1 in an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader at Centenary University on Saturday afternoon. The Knights took game one 9-0 in six innings before the Cyclones won the nightcap 4-2.
 
In game one, Sydney Wright went the distance in the circle for the win. The junior allowed three hits, no runs, and struck out seven in the 9-0 win in six innings.
 
The Knights opened the scoring in the second inning. With two runners on base, Natalie Jairdullo singled in Nicole Anderson. Dakota Marshall then scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 Neumann lead.
 
Neumann added four in the third. Gracie Jairdullo led off with a double and scored as Ellie Zarnawski reached on an error. The Knights scored two runs on back-to-back RBI groundouts. With two outs, Emily Miller tripled and scored on a double by Rylie Norris.
 
Anderson scored in the fifth on a single by N. Jairdullo. In the sixth, Tori Spinella led off with a single and Bella Morales reached on an error for two on base. Spinella scored on a sacrifice fly by Zarnawski and Morales came around to score the ninth run.
 
In game two, the Cyclones struck first with two runs in the first inning. Centenary added two more runs in the third. The Knights cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth. Norris singled and scored on a double by Zarnawski. Zarnawski came around to score on a single by Anderson.
 
Rebecca DiLeo went 6.0 innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits. She struck out five.
 
Neumann (11-17, 4-4 Atlantic East) heads to Ceder Crest on Monday for a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 PM.
