ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader with Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights took game one 8-4 before the Griffins won the nightcap 4-2.
In game one,
Sydney Wright went the distance in the circle for the win. She allowed four runs, two earned, and struck out three. Four Knights had two hits in the game.
The Griffens opened the game by scoring a run in the top of the first inning. The Knights responded as
Emily Ammon led off with a double, stole second and scored on a throwing error.
In the third, Neumann took advantage of a Gwynedd Mercy miscue and scored four runs. With the bases loaded,
Dakota Marshall singled in a run.
Natalie Jairdullo then hit into an RBI groundout.
Tori Spinella hit a two-run triple for a 5-1 lead.
In the fourth,
Ellie Zarnawski singled to score
Taylor Vaugh and put the Knights up 6-1. The Griffins got two runs back in the fifth. In the sixth,
Nicole Anderson singled with the bases loaded to score Ammon. Marshall then hit into a fielders' choice to score
Gracie Jairdullo.
Gwynedd Mercy scored one in the top of the seventh, but Neumann came away with the 8-4 game one win.
In the nightcap, the Griffins scored three unearned runs in the top of the first and one in the second for an early 4-0 lead. The Knights got on run back in the second as Spinella knocked in N. Jairdullo.
In the fourth, Ammon drew a bases loaded walk for a 4-2 score. The Knights had their chances but could not get another run across and fell 4-2.
Rebecca DiLeo pitched 7.0 innings in the circle and allowed just five hits, four unearned runs, and struck out six.
Neumann (10-14, 3-3 Atlantic East) will host Haverford for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3:00 PM.
