ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Men's Soccer team went toe-to-toe with Washington College on Saturday night and had to settle for a 1-1 tie in non-conference play.
Washington struck early as a cross from the left side was headed into the goal in the fourth minute. 11 minutes later,
Tony Huertero-Perez crossed the ball into the box, connecting with the head of
Jordan Illian, who immediately nudged it to
Luke Mejia who in turn headed home his first goal of the season, tying the game at one. For the rest of the half, the Knights had most of the possession, outshooting the Shoremen by a 5-2 margin, but the game remained equal at the break.
In the second half, both teams traded quality chances, but neither could find the breakthrough goal. In the last 13 minutes, Neumann had three high-quality chances within 20 yards of the goal. In the 77
th minute, Illian tried to bicycle in a cross but that was saved. A free kick just 30 seconds later was blocked by the defense. Finally, in the 83rd minute, Illian took a free kick and rang the ball off the outside of the post.
Illian led the way with eight attempts on the goal.
Markus Beugre put all three of his shots on goal while
Riley Senisi and
JP Phillip each had two shots.
Seiya Sato made two saves in goal.
Next up for the Knights (2-0-1), they will hit the road for the first time as they take on Immaculata University on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM.
