Assistant Coach Matt Freiberg is in his first year of coaching at the college level. He grew up in northeast Philadelphia, graduating from Central High School in 2012, followed by Penn State University in 2016. 

Matt spent the majority of his youth career playing AA hockey for the Blazers and Grundy Senators  organizations. During his time on those teams, they had multiple successful seasons reaching the district playoffs three separate occasions. Matt earned the title of team captain for all four seasons of midget hockey. 
 
Matt also played high school hockey at the varsity level for North Catholic his freshman through junior seasons all three years prior to the school closing down. He was the team captain two of those three years and brought them to two separate varsity Championships as well as one commissioners cup title. 
 
During college, Matt was recruited by Coach Gilligan to play for him at Penn State Brandywine where he excelled as a strong shut down center and penalty killer. He earned the title as an alternate captain as a freshman. During his time at Brandywine, they made it to the ACHA Regional finals, falling just short of the Division III national championships. He then transferred to Penn State Main Campus to complete his nursing degree. During his time at main campus, Matt played for the PSU Division II Roller hockey team while working as a strength and conditioning personal trainer at the school’s gym. 
 
Matt now resides is South Philadelphia and has been working as a cardiac thoracic surgery RN at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania for the past four years.
