Women's Basketball Gets First Win of Season

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann College women's basketball team earned its first win of the young season with a 61-51 win over Richard Stockton Saturday afternoon at the Marymount Marine Corps Tip-off.

 

Brittany Whetts led the Knights with her second double-double in as many games with 22 point and 14 rebounds.  Dominique Thompson added 14 points as Neumann improved to 1-1 on the season. Katie Young pulled down 11 rebounds. Neumann was 26-for-31 from the charity line (83.9%).

 

Stockton (0-2) had its scoring spread out with its leading point-getter s, Ashley Hart and Monique Garcia, each with eight points. Jenn Russell grabbed nine rebounds.

 

The Knights did not trail in the first half and led by as many as seven points. Neumann took a three points lead, 28-25, at the half.

 

Stockton game out of the locker room and scored the first four points of the second half to take a one point lead. With Stockton up by two points, 30-32, both teams went on a scoring drought. There were no points scored for over three minutes.  Stockton's Hart broke the scoring drought with a three-pointer as Stockton went up by five.

 

Stockton held the lead until Whetts hit two free throws with under four minutes remaining to put the Knights back up by one, 49-48. Neumann would hold Stockton to just two points in the final four minutes of the contest. Whetts scored seven points in the time period as Neumann sealed the 61-51 win.

 

Neumann will face Catholic tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. in the 4th/6th place game.
