Neumann Splits Matches in First Night at Blue Jay Classic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Neumann College volleyball team opened play at the Blue Jay Classic with a 3-2 loss to host Elizabethtown College Friday night. In the second set, the Knights defeated Wilkes, 3-0.

 

Neumann (5-7) won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-23, and looked for the win in the third set, but Elizabethtown (9-8) pulled out the 27-25 win. The fourth set was another close one with the Blue Jays winning by a 25-22 score. Elizabethtown took the match with a 15-10 win in the final set.

 

Ashley Mathis led the Knights with 14 kills. Julia Tarloski notched 12 kills and Emille Gruse added 11. Kristen Verone had 41 assists in the five-set match. Meghan Wilson notched 31 digs. Rachele DiMichele and Verone each added 17 digs and Rachael Sokolovich had 10.

 

Tarloski had five solo blocks as the team notched 12 blocks in the match. Gruse had four solo blocks.

 

Neumann defeated Elizabethtown 3-1 earlier this season at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic.

 

In the second match, Neumann (6-7) defeated Wilkes College (5-10) in three sets. Game scores were 25-14, 25-20, 28-26.

 

Against Wilkes, Tarloski led the team with eight kills and five aces. Sokolovich had six kills. Wilson notched 11 digs and Di Michele had nine. Verone dished out 30 assists.

 

 

The Knights will face McDaniel College at noon on Saturday in game three of the Blue Jay Classic. The standings after that match will determine the time for the second set on Saturday.
