GETTYSBURG, Pa - The Neumann College volleyball team finished the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic with a loss and a win. The Knights fell to Randolph Macon College in morning play and defeated Elizabethtown College in the afternoon. Neumann finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
In the first game of the day Neumann was led by senior
Rachael Sokolovich (Media, PA./Ridley HS), sophomore
Ashley Mathis (Norristown, PA. /Norristown) and senior
Kristen Verone (Folsom, PA. / Cardinal O'Hara). Sokolovich had 5 kills while Mathis chipped in 7 kills herself. Verone helped coordinate the Knight attack with 36 assists.
On defense senior
Meghan Wilson (West Chester, PA. / Bishop Shanahan) led the Knights with 16 digs. Junior
Melissa Haines (Brookhaven, PA./Sun Valley HS) had nine digs as well. Neumann battled Randolph Macon in each game and was very close to the victory. Randolph Macon won the first two games by scores of 26-24, 25-20. Neumann bounced back in the third with a 25-23 win of their own only to see Randolph Macon win the fourth set 25-23.
In the afternoon contests the Knights met Elizabethtown College for a re-match of their 2007 NCAA contest. Neumann defeated Elizabethtown 3 games to 1 with scores of 25-16, 25-14 in the first two games. Elizabethtown won the third game 25-17. Neumann finished the match with a victory in the fourth game, winning 25-22.
Freshmen
Jerrae Robinson (King of Prussia, PA. / Upper Merion HS) was electric with a hitting percentage of .380. Junior
Emilee Gruse (Lafayette, IN. / St. Mark's) contributed 11 kills. And, once again Verone coordinated the attack with 51 assists.
Neumann improves to 3-6 overall. The Knights will play again on September 20th when they host conference opponent Marywood University to open the Colonial States Athletic Conference season.
