Women's Ice Hockey Falls After 12 Goal Second Period

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann College and Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey teams combined for 12 goals in the second period Saturday night in non-conference play. The Pioneers came out of the game victorious with a 10-6 win.

 

Nicole Alexopoulos and Carly Fitzsimmons each had three points for the Knights, a goal and two assists. Jasper Thomson netted two goals and Jessica Schroeder notched and goal and an assist.

 

Taryn Lapierre netted a goal and two assists for Sacred Heart. Kate Dunlap and Gina Arnone scored two goals each. Whitney Dziama, Lauren Fontaine and Jaclyn Rideout all added a goal and an assist. Tara Kent and Nicole Palazzo had two assists.

 

Sacred Heart netted the first two goals of the game. Thomson scored for the Knights, from Alexopoulos, to cut the Pioneers led to 2-1 in the first intermission.

 

The second period was the story of the game. The teams combined for 12 goals in the 20 minutes, all even strength. The Pioneers scored in the first minute of the period to give them a 3-1 lead. The Knights then rattled off three straight goals from Brittany Metcalfe, Schroeder and Thomson, within a minute of play to give Neumann a 4-3 lead.

 

Sacred Heart responded with four straight goals over the next 10 minutes of play. Fitzsimmons scored with 1:24 left in the period before three goals were scored in the final minute, two by the Pioneers and one by the Knights. Sacred Heart held a 9-6 lead after the wild second period.

 

Sacred Heart notched the only goal of the third period to make the final score 10-6. Mel Brunet made 25 saves in net over the first two periods. Laura Keeley had seven saves in net during the third period.

 

Neumann, 6-7 on the season, will travel to Williams College next week for a pair of contests. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
