Women's Basketball Falls In OT

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann College women's basketball team fell to Centenary College, 84-83, in an overtime Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match-up Monday night.

 

Neumann had three players with double-doubles on the night. Brittany Whetts scored 26 points and pulled in 16 rebounds, Katie Young netted 12 points and grabbed 18 rebounds and Sami Borcky added 13 points and 12 boards. Krista DiRomualdo scored 15 points.

 

Centenary was led by Kristen Camuso with 29 points. Hannah Ally netted 19 points and 13 boards. Jen Vasta scored 14 points and Marissa DiStasio grabbed 15 boards.

 

There were just three baskets scored in the overtime period. DiRomualdo sunk a three-pointer to give the Knights an 83-80 lead in the extra session. Vasta answered with a lay-up to make it a one-point game. The Cyclones then missed two free throws and the Knights missed four from the line as time was winding down. Vasta hit the game-winning bucket with 54 second left in overtime. Neumann had a chance to hit a last second shot with two second left, but the lay-up attempt missed.

 

The game was filled with fouls and free throws. Neumann was 30-for-50 from the line while Centenary was 24-for-29.

 

With the game tied at 13-all, the Cyclones went on a 13-2 run to take a commanding 26-15 lead with 9:16 left in the first half. The Knights chipped away and pulled to within four points, 26-22, but the Cyclones built their lead back up and took a 12 points advantage, 43-30, at break.

 

Centenary seemed to have control of the game and built its lead up to 18, 60-42, with 12:45 left in regulation. However, Neumann did not go quietly and slowly crept back into the game. With 6:51 left, the Knights had cut the Cyclones lead to five, 67-62. The teams traded baskets and with 4:45 remaining, Caitlin Agnew hit a free throw to tie the game at 71. Agnew then hit a lay-up to give the Knights a two point lead. Neumann would build its lead to five, 77-72, with 2:32 left. With 12 seconds left in regulation, Vasta, who scored the Cyclones last six points, hit a jumper to tie the game at 80.

 

Neumann is now 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Centenary is 8-2 and a perfect 4-0 in the CSAC. The Knights will travel to Allentown, Pa. for a conference game at Cedar Crest College on Thursday night.
