ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann College women's ice hockey team fell to visiting Sacred Heart University, 5-4, Friday night in non-conference action.
Jasper Thomson opened the scoring for the Knights and scored the only goal of the first period off assists from Angie Conte and Kayla Dubowski. Dubowski gave Neumann a 2-0 lead with a goal in the second period from Kristine Acosta. Lauren Fontaine netted a shorthanded goal for Sacred Heart to cut the Knights lead in half. Neumann held a 2-1 lead in the second intermission.
The Pioneers came out on fire in the third period and scored four goals to jump to a 5-2 lead, but the Knights did not let up. Jessica Schroeder scored from Carly Fitzsimmons and Nicki Blazenko at the 11:57 mark. Nicole Alexopoulos scored at the 13:34 mark from Thomson and Brittany Metcalfe to make the score 5-4 Pioneers. Neumann pulled its goalie for the last minute of play, but could not capitalize.
Mel Brunet made 36 saves in net for Neumann as it is now 6-6 on the season. Amanda Nagel had 23 saves for the Pioneers as they improve to 7-10-2 on the season. These two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Ice Works.
