ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team dropped its opening game of the season to the Richard Stockton College, 71-59, Sunday afternoon.
Cecily Scavicchio led the Knights offense with 15 points and 4 steals. Senior guard Stephanie Fanto added 11 points. Katie Young grabbed nine rebounds
Richard Stockton was led by Aspen Price-Perry with 16 points and Aliyah Nelson with 15 points. LaTonya Oliver added 11 points and Kristin Sciarrillo pulled in 10 rebounds.
Both teams struggle offensively the first several minutes of the game. Krista DiRomualdo opened up the scoring for Neumann, connecting on a jumper a minute into the game. During the first nine minutes of the game, Stockton held the Knights to four points and took a 17-4 advantage.
Bethany Humenik connected on a three-pointer at the 10:51 mark to make the score 17-7 and try and jump start the Neumann offense. However, the Knights would not be able to break the double-digit mark until Scavicchio netted a three-pointer with 7:15 left in the half. The Ospreys held an 18 point lead, 28-10. The Knights would chip away and Stockton took a 14 points advantage, 36-22, at halftime.
The Knights offense clicked in the second half and they were able to keep pace with Stockton. Neumann outscored Stockton, 37-35, in the second half.
With the score 62-44 Stockton, Neumann would go on a 9-2 run to but the Ospreys lead to 11, 64-53. Cecily Scavicchio's lay-up cut Stockton's led to nine points with just one minute remaining in regulation. Neumann could not cut into the Osprey's led anymore, falling 71-59.
Neumann (0-1) is back in action on Tuesday night against King's College. Tip-off is slated to 7 p.m.
