Women's Basketballs holds off the Monarchs

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 79-70 win over King's (Pa.) College Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest.

Brittany Whetts led the Knights with her first double-double of the season with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Krista DiRomualdo added 13 points. Jordan Elgart netted three from beyond the arc for nine points.

Kaitlin Michaels scored 20 points for King's. Megan Rigous added 12.

The Knights started the game out strong and built a 16-5 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Neumann would extend its lead to 19 at the half, 44-25.

The Monarchs scored the first seven points of the seconds half to cut the Knights lead to 12. King's would keep chipping away at Neumann's lead and with 9:12 left, the advantage had been cut to six, 56-50.

Two free throws and a jumper by Whetts put the Knights back up by 10 with 8:38 remaining. Neumann would never trail, but King's got within two points, 66-64, with 2:20 left on the clock. Nicole Feby answered with a three-pointer and Sami Borcky followed with two free throws to extend the lead back to seven. The final minute featured fouls and free throws and the Knights held on for the 79-70 win.

Neumann is now 1-1 on the season. The Knights will compete in the Lebanon Valley Tournament this weekend beginning with Delaware Valley on Friday night at 8 p.m.
