RUTLAND, Vt. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team fell to Tufts University in the first round of the Rutland Herald Invitational, hosted by Castleton State College, Saturday afternoon.
Mat Valois and Jordan Zalba scored for the Knights. Marlon Gardner notched two assists. Ross MacKinnon made 17 saves in the loss.
Neumann (3-4-2) out shot Tufts 50-22 in the game.
Tufts scored first, 8:53 into the first period on the power play. Valois tied the game at one with a power play goal three minutes later.
Zalba scored the only goal of the second period with under five minutes left in the period. Neumann took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Tufts scored four goals in the third period to take control of the game. The Jumbos tied the game at two just 12 seconds into the third period. Tufts scored the eventual game-winner 3:06 into the period and added an insurance goal at the 7:27 mark. The Jumbos added an empty net goal to seal the win.
Neumann will face-off again tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in the consolation game of the Rutland Herald Invitational. The Knights will go against the loser of the Becker / Castleton game.
