RUTLAND, Vt. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team blanked Becker College, 9-0, Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Rutland Herald Invitational, hosted by Castleton State.
David Gervais (2 goals, 2 assists) and Greg Virgo (1 goal, 3 assists) each notched four points for Neumann. Andrew Love scored his first goal and added two assists. Four other Knights had a two-point game. Matt Tendler made 10 saves in net for his second shutout of the season.
Marlon Gardner opened the scoring for Neumann 13:18 into the game, off an assist from Mat Valois. Aaron Keaney netted a goal, from Cory Park and Jordan Zalba, with 1:30 left in the first and Neumann took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Knights added three more goals in the second period. Love scored five minutes into the second session. Harley Garrioch and Virgo assisted on the goal. Gervais (Love and Valois) and Jeremy Gates (Virgo and Gervais) scored 46 seconds apart midway through the period and Neumann held a 5-0 advantage.
Neumann did not let up in the third and added four more goals. Virgo (Gervais and Gates) scored a power play goal 2:28 into the period. Gervais (Virgo and Love) netted his second goal two minutes later. Park, from Keaney and Zalba, then lit the lamp at the 15:51 mark and Sean Crozier, from Scott Farrell and Brent Tamane, capped the scoring minute later.
Gervais was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Neumann (4-4-2) out shot Becker 59-10 in the win. The Knights also did not commit a penalty. Neumann will travel to Lebanon Valley College on Friday for an ECAC West contest. The puck is set to drop at 3 p.m.
