Volleyball Falls to PBU in Five

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Philadelphia Biblical University Thursday night in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semifinal game. Games scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 24-26, 15-13. 

 

Ashley Mathis led the team with 14 kills. Emilee Gruse added nine. Cecily Scavicchio dished out 37 assists. Victoria Limmina had 18 digs. Melissa Haines and Maria Donahue each added 10. Natalie George notched two solo blocks. Lauren Sheehan added four block assists. 

 

With the score 22-21 Eagles in the first set, PBU scored three straight points for the set one win.

 

The Knights tied the game at 2-sets apiece with a 25-21 win. With Neumann up 21-10, Gruse notched a kill to go up by two points. Sheehan followed with a kill of her own for a 23-20 advantage. The teams then traded service errors before Sheehan notched a kill for the set two win.

 

In the third set, PBU opened on an 11-3 run and won the set 25-15 to take a 2-1 lead.

 

The fourth set featured 12 tied scores and neither team up by more than two points. PBU took a 24-22 lead and looked for its match point. A kill by Mathis and an error by the Eagles knotted the game at 24-all. A team must win a set by two points. Scavicchio put the Knights up 25-24 with a service ace and the Knights took the fourth set 26-24 on an Eagle attack error.

 

The beginning of the fifth and deciding set again was a back-and-forth affair. With the scored knotted a nine, PBU rattled off five straight points to take a14-9 lead in the race to 15. PBU had an attached error as it attempted to put away the match.

 

The Knights were not going to go quietly. Sheehan notched a service ace to make the score 14-11. Two Eagle attack errors made the score 14-13 PBU. The Eagles notched a kill on the next play to secure the 15-13 win in the fifth set and a 3-2 win in the match.

 

Philadelphia Biblical will face Cabrini in the CSAC Championship match on Saturday. Neumann ends its season 11-24 overall.
