Knights Advance to Semifinals with 63-56 Win

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann College women's basketball team defeated Marywood University, 63-56, Monday evening in the first round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs.

 

Two Knights had double-doubles in the game. Brittany Whetts scored 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sami Borcky netted 14 points and 11 rebounds. Krista DiRomualdo added 12 points.

 

Mariah Schaeffer led the Pacers with 19 points. Stephanie Fusaro added 10.

 

Neither team dominated the first part of the game. With the score tied at 12-all, the Knights then went on a 10-0 run to take a 22-12 lead. The Pacers answered with eight straight points to cut the lead to two, 22-20. DiRomualdo then hit a three-pointer with 3:36 left to break the Knights scoreless drought. Marywood then netted six points to take a 26-25 lead.

 

Katie Young and Alyssa Mayo traded baskets. Nicole Feby hit a jumper with 11 seconds remaining the first half to give Neumann a one point advantage, 29-28, at halftime.

 

The Knights built their lead up to 10 points, 44-34, with a lay-up by Whetts. Neumann would take its largest lead, 13 points, 51-38, with 7:30 left in regulation. Marywood would not go quietly and with 2:33 left, the Pacers climbed their way back to within two points. Marielle Thorsen was fouled on a three point shot with two minutes left and converted all three free throws to put Marywood in the lead.

 

Young hit two free throws to put Neumann back up by one. Fusaro hit a jumper to put the Pacers back up by one.  DiRomualdo sank a three-pointer with 1:15 left to put the Knights up by two. DiRomualdo then hit one-of-two from the line for a three point Knights advantage. As the Pacers were attempting to inbound the ball, Whetts stole the pass. Caitlin Agnew was fouled and made two free throws to give Neumann a five point cushion with 18 ticks left. Borcky hit two from the line with four seconds on the clock to seal the win.

 

With the win, Neumann advances to the semifinals.  The Knights will travel to Gwynedd-Mercy to face Griffins on Wednesday at p.m.
